Drug Abusers and Small Businesses

Drug use in the United States is rising at an alarming pace, and this is being felt in no greater place than the small American business.

While substance abuse is a valid concern for businesses of any size, smaller businesses are at a greater risk of drug abusers damaging or completely destroying the company.

More drug abusers work there.
As far as American employees go as a whole, about half work at large corporations and the other half work at small business. The landscape shifts dramatically when looking at drug users.

90% of drug users work at small businesses. There’s more than one reason for this:

1: Smaller businesses often do not require new employees to undergo drug testing during the hiring process. Drug users have a better chance of ‘slipping through’ to jobs than at a larger corporation.

2: Small businesses often do not have an established drug-free workplace policy.

3. Owners of smaller businesses often have a more personal relationship with their employees than larger business owners. This creates a more difficult and complex situation when dealing with a drug abusing employee. Small business owners are more likely to turn a blind eye to drug abuse and give more ‘second chances’ than owners of larger companies.

The large amount of drug users leaves small businesses extremely vulnerable to high costs of employing drug abusers.

-The ‘dead weight’ costs. Drug users are more likely to miss work, be less productive, and be less focused. While the cost of these actions is difficult to quantify, it can add up to lots of dollars down the drain.

-The ‘lost customer’ costs. An unproductive employee may mishandle customer requests, needs, and complaints, causing disgruntled customers to take their business elsewhere. A small company most likely cannot absorb losing customers as easily nor can attract customers as quickly as a larger company. These losses can greatly impact the bottom line.

-The legal costs. Smaller businesses pockets are not as deep as larger corporations. If an impaired employee causes an accident or injury, the resulting lawsuits, workers comp claims, and property damage could devastate a small business much faster than a large corporation.

-The co-worker costs. Employees of small businesses work closely together, and a drug abusing employee can strangle the productivity. Knowing other employees are abusing drugs can bring down morale. Workers may also have to redo work or cover for a drug abusing co-worker. The top producing employees may become disgruntled by the drug abusers performance to the point that they may leave the company.

Smaller business owners need to be aware of this trend and take steps to protect their company from drug abusing employees.

Step 1: Implement drug screening as part of the pre-employment screening process. A good portion of drug testing is relatively low-cost. This step can bring about a high level of benefit by screening out drug abusers BEFORE they are hired.

Step 2: Check out OSHA’s website. There are lots of free tools and resources available to create a drug free workplace.

Step 3: It’s advisable to have a written plan of how and on what occasions your company screens for drugs, and the actions that will be taken if an employee has drugs in their system. Stay consistent with that plan.

These 3 steps are low cost to the company and a good starting point to minimize a company’s risk and expense of employing drug abusers.

Having a program in place can play a vital role in increasing productivity, minimizing accidents, decreasing theft, and improving safety and attendance. And, for small companies, this can be the difference in thriving or going out of business.

Prescription Drug Abuse Is A Deadly Addiction

Medicines that we use to cure diseases can sometimes become a cause of drug addiction. Pill addiction or prescription drug abuse is what these addictions are called. It has been with us ever since doctors have started prescribing medicines by writing it on a piece of paper and has now become more widespread.

The beginning of refill or repeat prescription enables patients to avail a renewed prescription easily. This further allows people to visit a nearby chemist store and purchase their preferred drug simply by filling their details such as their name, contact address and the drug they want to buy. Repeat prescriptions are generally signed as routine these days. Doctors simply sign the prescription without considering the need for it.

If a patient asks for more repeat prescriptions, it is the duty of a consulting doctor to personally review treatment once again. Doctors these days are do not seem to care about these issues. That is why the numbers of prescription drug abuse cases are increasing at a rapid pace. Painkiller medicines are now being widely used by people to overcome body pains and it has now become the main cause of drug addiction.

Identifying the Roots of Drug Abuse

Often we talk about drug abuse, its effects and sometimes about drug addiction treatments as well. Seldom have we pondered over the thoughts why addiction to several addictive substances is on constant rise! Can you ever disagree that without knowing roots of the problem, you cannot solve a problem? It is exactly true in case of addiction too. Unless you know why people become addicted to drugs so easily, you can hardly cure any kind of addiction. Well, not one but many factors are collectively responsible for societies being stuck with addiction crisis.

Some of those factors that easily excite people towards drugs are unhappiness in personal life, any kind of failure in love, education or job, prolonged sickness, separation from loved ones, and more importantly, crime. A person can easily become a victim of drug abuse if he or she is involved in any sort of crime. Psychologists explain that, for committing a crime, a person needs some extra courage and energy. Needless to mention, the source of extra energy is derived from drugs. Daily drug use of the criminals is much intense when compared to other abusers.

Personal grief and frustration stands to be one of the most common causes for addiction to drugs. A person can get addicted to a drug when his personal expectations are not fulfilled. Such a happening can take place anywhere and anytime. From a family mishap to sudden redundancy, personal grief can spring from anything and everything. A person can develop dependence on any sort of substance following any of such miseries that occurs to his personal life.

As many experts discern, easy availability of drugs is another reason for abuse of drugs. By saying so, they mainly refer to prescription drugs and the over-the-counter drugs. The main problem of the prescription drugs is that one can avail such substances from the medicine shops and the online drug stores as well. More and more people get addicted to drugs simply because they can avail the substances easily and without any difficulty. Interestingly, these abusers are somewhat different from the commonplace ones. Prescription drug abuse mainly begins from the actual requirement of the drugs that are prescribed as medicines principally.

Another overlooked factor, which is a genuine harbinger of signs of drug abuse, is the trend of following a fad. Drugs, in some places are just as fashion statements. Drug abusers consider them being smarter than other people are. Such a trend is more vividly observable in several educational institutions and sports clubs. This is in fact the main reason sportsmen and teenage students are frequently found in the trap of drug abuse. While attempting to drive away drug abuse from the society, one should give more importance to its origination roots for curing the crisis from the root.
